My week-long trip to Malta was the perfect Mediterranean getaway to escape the cold in June. Not only is this beautiful part of the world known for its iconic blue hues, but it’s rich history captivated me from the very beginning. Whether it was exploring 5000 year-old pre-historic temples, uncovering the history of Knights of St John and the war rooms and tunnels from World War Two, my time in Malta was full of surprises.
“I loved getting off the beaten track and heading underground to the multilevel burial chambers of Hal Saflieni Hypogeum.”
I loved getting off the beaten track and heading underground to the multilevel burial chambers of Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. Dated to 4000 BCE with intricated wall paintings and carvings, the fascinating subterranean structure only allows a handful of visitors each day. It was an amazing experience and whilst it still remains somewhat of a secret, I highly recommend booking in advance to avoid missing out.
In terms of food, you can’t go wrong sitting in the old palazzo in the bustling streets of Valletta, enjoying a fresh Pastizzi! And I loved getting a taste of the locally brewed Cisk beer at the famous Café Cordina – established in 1837.
The Upper Barrakka Garden’s is a must visit. The views over the harbor are spectacular, and the gardens are beautiful making it a great place to just sit and take it all in.
Best Moment…
Spending the day sailing out to the small island of Comino and swimming in the amazing waters of the Blue Lagoon. It’s a paradise for swimming and water activities as Comino is car-free, and virtually uninhabited.
My Top Tips for Anyone Thinking of Holidaying Here…
Rent yourself a car as it’s easy to self-drive being on the same side of the road. It’s only 20 minutes from Valletta to each side of the Island, however the local buses are easy to use at only 1.50 euros for 2 hours all over Malta.
Don’t miss the island of Gozo and make sure you take a day cruise to the Blue Lagoon.
The best time to visit Malta is from October to May (or early June), when the streets aren’t crowed with tourists and there isn’t too much traffic. You’ll enjoy mild temperatures too.
