In December I was lucky enough to travel with St Patrick’s College Ballarat on their USA Basketball Tour. The 2 week tour saw 28 year 9, 10 & 11 students and 6 staff and parents take in the sights of Washington DC, Durham, Raleigh, Ashville and Charlotte in North Carolina and a final stop in Anaheim
& Los Angeles.
After a delay leaving Melbourne, we had to sprint through LAX to catch our connecting flight to DC! Once there I think a few of the boys were surprised at exactly how cold it was but most took it in their stride. In DC we were taken on a tour of the city including stops at The White House, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. We were also treated to a tour of the US Capitol building which included a brief viewing of the sitting US
Congress.
On our way from DC to North Carolina we stopped in Richmond, Virginia where we were taken on a tour of the Civil War Battlefields that litter the city. This was a very eye opening and humbling experience that included a walk through the very
battlefields where one of the main battles took place. In North Carolina we were treated to a plethora of basketballing sights.
We attended games at and received guided tours of the famous Duke University and the University of North Carolina (The college that Michael Jordan attended). The boys also played the majority of the games here which for them will be an experience they will never forget I’m sure.

Upon returning to LA we spent a day at Disneyland before heading downtown for most of the boys first ever live NBA game. They were very lucky to be given the opportunity to high five the NBA superstars when running onto the court for warm-ups and to have a shoot on the court after the game, something I enjoyed doing also! From there the main group returned home whilst I travelled on to Las Vegas to spend Christmas before returning the LA for a few days and then flying home. Overall, a fantastic trip with a number of unforgettable experiences.
