India is well known for its specialist luxury trains such as the Palace on Wheels, and the Royal Rajasthan, among others. In mid October 2015, I had the pleasure of experiencing a trip of a lifetime on one of the other Luxury trains called ‘Deccan Odyssey’.
The itinerary took us from Mumbai to Vadodara a Royal City known for its palace and monuments, to Udaipur where we cruised on Lake Pinchola and visited the
Palace , Jodhpur the Blue City with its Mehrangarh Fort, Agra for Taj Mahal
and Agra Fort, Ranthambore National Park in an attempt to spot a Bengal tiger, which was successful, Jaipur with its Amber Fort and then onto Delhi, where this fantastic journey ended.
The train travels overnight to each new destination, therefore giving a full day for sightseeing in each city visited. Sightseeing is split into morning activity, back to the train for lunch and then more sightseeing in the afternoon.
This was a railroad journey like no other, in a land like no other, an amazing and ever changing vista of a colourful, vibrant and ancient India.
Deccan Odyssey carries around 80 passengers and the accommodation is
excellent with modern ensuite bathrooms, internet and wonderful service from the staff on board. The train has two restaurants, a lounge car, library and health spa. Meal time was a delight with choices of both Indian and Western Cuisine.
