In February I travelled to India with my Aunty Carol, sister Kerrie and her husband Rob.
Our first stop was Kolkata to visit Hussain at his office who designed our My Trip travel app. Then on to the Queen Victoria Garden to see Mother Theresa’s tomb and we had a wonderful experience visiting the Udayud orphanage where Steve Waugh is one of its Patrons.
Next stop was Mumbai where at last count 22 million people live and approximately 52,000 taxis are in service. We witnessed the Dabbawala Tiffin lunch box system at work where 200 thousand tiffins are delivered each day for just $10.00 a month. We also visited the house Ghandi stayed at in Mumbai. We saw his bedroom and letters he had written including one to Adolph Hitler.
Delhi was our next destination where we visited Ghandi’s tomb and the location where he was assassinated. The Delhi market is a great place to visit which turns over in excess of USD 1 Billion Dollars a year.
The Hindu holy city of Varranasi on the banks of the Ganges was the next stop and what an amazing place it is. In the morning we were up early and travelled by boat along the river to view prayers and ritual bathing in the Ganges.
The next stop was Lucknow, the start of the tourist region called the Golden Triangle. Along the Golden Triangle we saw the most amazing tombs, forts and palaces the Maharaja’s had built. We visited the Taj Mahal in Agra which is symmetrically the most perfect building and adding to the buildings perfection is that there is no background to make it stand out even more.
We then travelled by our own mini bus to Jaipur and stayed the night at the former Maharaja’s palace called Konata Castle where parts of the The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was filmed.
India really is an amazing, crazy, busy fascinating place to visit.
